Post subject:  Vitamin Supplements for Pregnancy

Just wondering if anyone has tried the Blackmores Pregnancy vitamins. I started on them yesterday to get a boost while TTC. I took one last night before bed and all day today I have had the most disgusting burps. They smell like sulpher or rotten eggs and have had the crockest tummy in ages, I swear I've been on the loo more times today than I have been at my computer (I'm at work BTW) and it hurts....oh how it hurts....... I read up on them before and they say to take with food. Did I read that on the bottle you ask?? NO!!! Lesson learnt...... feeling rather sorry for myself at the moment, and sorry for the girl who shares my office!! Luckily for me she has a sense of humour, this is probably more information that any of you require but has anyone else had any experiences like this??

Haven't tried Blackmore's so can't really help you there, I'm just on a super dose of folic acid and also iron supplements. Are you testing soon Tracey?!!!

Me too, take elevit have taken it for months, it makes me feel great. A friend did take the blackmores but not too sure on her comments.. I agree expensive, but worth all the money.
I think that Ferrit.co.nz has reasonable priced Elevit.

Yep I take Elevit too - Have done for pretty much the last year or so.

However in saying this I went to a hospital visit for pre-pregnacy care, with the gestational diabetes clinic recently and the doctor there said that she wanted me to just take folic acid - 5mg - because it is a more concentrated dose, and she would be happier to know I am getting the full amount. I would have thought that elevit would have had the correct amount in it really - she is probably being OTT.

Tracey the other thing that she said to me was that they may put me on aspirin and Metformin, which can be used for gestational diabetes to a level, but is also used on ladies that have had pre-clampsia or placental disease in former pregnancies. She said that it has shown the ability to help the placenta develop better (she didn't quite say it like that). I don't know if this is of interest to you or not?

I haven't tried any of those vitamins yet, but probably should. Only taking Folic Acid at the moment.

I took Elevit with the last three of mine and got it from Pharmecy online or something like that and it was cheaper there when you got it in boxes of 100

I'm kind of the view that we don't need to be taking supplements for anything unless we have an actual difficiency in something. Folic acid is of course very important in early pregnancy and while TTC so we should all take that. If you are eating a really good diet then you should be getting everything you need.

There are some companies out there that are making huge $$$ by making us think that we have to take supplements during pregnancy.

Of course this is your decision to make, and if it makes you feel a little more confident about the pregnancy then its probably worth it IMO.

My sister's fertility specialist recommended Elevit too.

Big apologies to Blackmore  turns out that I may have food poisioning from KFC!!! I had some on Saturday and didnt get sick until Monday, but as DH pointed out that happened one other time to me too. I phoned the Doc and apparently the nasty little food bugs can become quite active 24-48 hours afterwards! I just assumed it was the supplements cos I started them the nightbefore! I'm off sick today, still feel horrible. I've decided to wait until the weekend before I start the supplement again, just to make sure. I took Elevit with GG but the Doc wanted me to stop them and start of the Folic acid too so she knew what dose I was taking. Apparently the Blackmores one has the same sorts of goodies in it as Elevit but at half the price.
Oh Queenbean, I am due for AF today and have the cramps, but that could be because I have the squirts! So will wait and see what happens this week as to a pg test, I took one last week before my followup appointment (just to make sure) and it was negative.
And thanks Yvonne, that is interesting, I was put on low dose asprin about a month ago, then taken off them on Friday, apparently I was supposed to start them once they have a scan showing a "confirmed" pg. Not sure why the change in plans but oh well.......

Post subject:  Re: Vitamin Supplements for Pregnancy

hi there,

Just thought I'd leave a note to say that although it makes no sense and goes against most logic, my obstetrition has actually given me a pamphlet saying 'The use of multivitamins at the time of becoming pregnant is not advised' and also the 0.8mg of folic acid in the elevit and blackmores is the bare minimum, the actually doseage recommended is 5mg.
