Post Scans - Good or Bad
I have been to my midwife today for my routine appointment, 26 weeks and 6 days today. I have also been going to a high risk OB, with him I have been having growth scans every 2 weeks. The mw expressed concern today about how often we are having these scans, I told her that it helps with the reassurance that everything is still on track, but she seems to think that too many scans can cause long term probs with kids. She has told me to do some research, coz she wants me to do the scans monthly.... Since this is the time that we lost Beanie I feel that it has helped me get my head in order...

I just wondered how everyone else out there has dealt with scans, r we possibly having scans too frequently, could this be harming my wee baking man???

well as you know I was having scans every two weeks too, and as a far as I can tell they havent affected J at all. My Mum is of the school of thought that there can be too many scans too, but I say if they put your mind at ease then what is the problem? I will be interested to read what others have to say on this though.

Ah, I personally think this is crap. My sister is a sonographer and scanned both of her children multiple times throughout both her pregnancies and they are healthy as healthy can be. My father is also a radiologist and he has never said anything about the risk of scans. There has never been any solid evidence to my knowledge that ultrasounds are harmful to babies. I have had heaps too this pregnancy!! Personally, I would trust my specialist over the opinion of most midwives. HTH!!!

I haven't heard anything about scans being bad but I guess your MW is just being cautious. I'm sure they wouldn't do them if there was any suggestion of them being harmful to bubs.

That is what I thought. Initally the OB wanted to do them monthly but then obviously clicked on with 1 loss we wanted to have the reassurance that the baby was growing etc. So he is happy to keep doing them 2 weekly. It just kinda freaked me out this morning when she said there could be long term probs with kids possibly, even though hard evidence is not there to state this is correct. I feel alot better thanks for your kind replies.

My m/w was the same about scans I did try to do a little research and found nothing about it which was reassuring, yet when they wanted to do the amineocetsis which has got risks she was keen for me to have, My opinion is do what makes you feel more comfortable with.

I too had scans every two weeks, this was a great reassurance for me. My midwife encouraged it and I trust her 100%. I agree, do what you feel is best. Your OB is in a better position than your MW to know the risks as they are more trained in that area.

Thanks ladies, as I thought. I am just going to leave it as is, I am comfortable with the idea that we are going to catch anything going wrong having the 2 week scans, it can't be any worse than the midwife using her doppler. So the case in my eyes is closed...
Thanks for all your feedback, it helps to get a little guidance from others that have been in the same boat. Especially with those of you that have just had their little wee miracles. We are currently 27 weeks and 2 days. This little baking boy was approx 954g at 26 weeks when we had our last scan on xmas eve, this is approx 200g heavier than Beanie at a similar gestation. Baking boy had put on 254g since the last scan 2 weeks prior, with all vitals in place with both him and me, all is well with the Turner pregnancy.
Good luck to everyone out there that is also preggers, I wish you all a safe and healthy pregnancy.

Post Re: Scans - Good or Bad
Sorry I'm coming in late on this one.

I just thought I'd add that my concern would be more with your own mental health than that of the baby. I know some people who refuse all scans while pregnant for various reasons, some because of the unknown factor of whether or not it causes harm to the baby and some because they are happy not knowing. In my case I rufused my 12 week nuchal fold scan because I didn't want to go through the stress of having a 'bad' result when a) US isn't terribly accurate anyway and b) what would it achieve (I wouldn't abort a pregnancy because of Downs and if it was another abnormality the baby wouldn't survive anyway). I did have 2 viability scans in the 1st tri and my 20week scan to rule out any defects that might require urgent attention at birth ie. heart problems or placenta previa.

My SIL is going through a very rough time ATM too with her pregnancy. She is due at the end of Feb and under specialist treatment because she is overseas and that is what they do there. She has been tested for virtually every ailment under the sun, amnio and multiple scans and to be honest its been the case that if you look hard enough you'll find something wrong eventually. :( They have found that the baby has some fluid on the brain, one sonographer told her to abort the pregnancy yet another Dr told her that the fluid is still in the upper limits of normal :? She is suffering terribly and I can only imagine what this stress is doing to her poor baby too.

I suppose what I am trying to say is just make sure that these scans are not causing you or your DH too much stress, because that would be something you just don't need.

Thanks for that, and will take that onboard. I think at this stage it would be a little more the opposite, because everything so far this pg has been smooth sailing, if I waited to have a scan or did not have another until he was born that would totally not do me mental justice at all. I am deeply sorry to hear of the issues of your SIL and hope that everything works out fine for her. We get dealt some tough hands in life.
Thank you for feedback.

Totally nothing wrong with it. My OB was scanning me every second day for the last week I was pregnant with Andrew, and he is as fine as he can be.

I had 17 'official' scans with the gremlins, plus scans at each OB visit and extra ones in hospital and I *think* they're fine lol, a bit hectic but otherwise pretty normal!

The only possible side effect to have come out of the numerous studies done into u/s safety is slightly reduced birth weight. The WHO mandate that the benefits outweigh the risks of using u/s technology to monitor the health of fetuses. And it certainly didn't affect the gremlins weights - they were 7lb 36-weekers!

Thanks ladies, we did decide in the end to try to leave it a mth for the next scan. I thought it was going to be really difficult but I have felt the little man move all the time, so have felt as ease. My OB had gone away anyhow but sugguested that if I did require scanning to get referral to Ascot anyhow. But I feel like everything is actually going really really well. Beanie is certainly looking after us.
