Post Cervical cerclage.
Just wondering if anyone here has had a cervical cerclage? I just went to my follow-up appointment to discuss Blake’s post mortem results. The pathologist believes that I went into premature labour because of an infection. However, when I spoke to the registrar she thought that it is still likely that I went into labour because of an incompetent cervix. So, what I’m really asking is has anybody had this done and what was their experience with this procedure?

Thanks for your help, Angela.

Hi Angela i dont know alot about this but i have read a book called "To full term: A mother's triumph over misscarriage" and i talks about her experience with Cervical cerclage and the different types. The author had 2 misscarriages then lost twins at 20 weeks from preterm labour but then with the stitch made it to full term on her last pregnancy. It tells her story, its got quite alot of info in there. I found it at the libraray its by Darci Klein.

Hi Angela,

I lost my first Angel Camden from Incompetent Cervix. By the time it was discovered it was too late as my waters broke and I had no choice but to deliver.

My next pregnancy I was admitted to hospital at 14wks to have the McDonalds Stitch put in place. Sadly thou the stitch failed which is not very common only a 10% risk of the stitch failing. I gave birth to Keegan 2 years ago today. My waters broke the night before. We had to decide weather we removed the stitch or leave it and see what happens. We left the stitch in. At just after 3pm I went to go to the toilet and to my Horror I delivered a perfect little Angel at 17wks 4ds Gest. He managed to make his way out thru the stitch. I ended up with a 2cm tear on the right side of my cervix from the stitch.

My last Pregnancy I was admitted to Hospital at 11wks to have the Shirodkar Stitch put in. All was going well till I got to 21wks. You can read Caeden's Birth Story in the Stories page. Basically the Shirodkar stitch failed me also which is very rear only a 2% Risk of Failure.

I am about to head up to Auckland to see the Spealist to see what we do next.

Goodluck with your next pregnancy. If you have any questions please ask!! I would recommend going for the Shirodkar than the McDonalds it has alot better sucess.

Also that book "To Full Term" Is an excellent book to read highly recommend it.

Thanks so much, Fleur. Feeling a little nervous and anxious at the moment. I’m really hoping that I won’t need a cerclage stitch. I would like to think that it was the infection that caused the incompetent cervix and not the other way around. Thanks again for your best wishes and support.

Hi guys i am new here and just thought i would explain what has happened with me.. 2 years ago i got preggy with twins but at 23 weeks i went into pre term labour and delivered 2 little girls both too perfect for this world.. i then went on to get preggy with a little boy and had a mcdonalds suture put into place but that failed due to labour.. our little boy was born on the 9 of may and survived for an hour and half.. i then got sent to hamilton hospital and they told me i had an incompetent cerivx and needed a trans abdominal stitch for the next pregnancy placed at 12 weeks.. i am now 17 weeks preggy had the stitch done and am hoping this will work as there is a very high success rate with this stitch which i had done in auckland.. baby willbe born by c-section as the stitch is permanant..i am keeping fingers crossed and hope this works.. i would love to hear from anyone that has had this done and talk to people..i hope everyone is well and am sorry for anyones loss...

Hi bodhigirl,

I’m so sorry to hear of your losses. What happened when you got the McDondald’s stitch put in? Did you go into labour when they were trying to place the stitch? I’ve heard about the transabdominal cerclages but I don’t know anyone who has one (apart from you now). I use an American website forum for women with incompetent cervix.

http://www.i-am-pregnant.com/encycloped ... nt-Cervix/

If you post on there maybe someone will be able to tell you about their experience with a transabdominal cerclage? Best of luck with this pregnancy, I hope that you are coping alright.

I’m currently 30 weeks (yay!) pregnant with my second child. My son was born at 20 weeks and 5 days and I was diagnosed with an incompetent cervix. For this pregnancy, I had the McDonalds stitch placed at 14 weeks. It was meant to be a preventative stitch however by the time they got around to placing it, I was already starting to dilate!! I’m also on the drug, Nifedipine at the moment. It is supposed to stop my uterus contracting. My stitch comes out in less than 7 weeks and I’m really looking forward to meeting our little girl.

Feel free to message me whenever you want.

Angela.

Hi Ladies,

Yeah, an incompetent cervix is more common than people realise. I think that I was reading somewhere that it occurs in 1-2% of all pregnant women?

My stitch is doing the job well so far. I have my next specialist appointment on Monday and will have to see what he says then.

J&K and bodhigirl, hope you are both doing OK.

I want to try again! Its been just over 3months. Is that to soon?
My incompetent cervix is because iv had abnormal smears for the last 5 years and then it jumped up to CIN2 so they decided that i needed laser surgery. Stupid thing is now its abnormal again. So things are not looking to good. Kina want to try again as i panic i wont be able to have kids.

Let me know what your specialist sees. Fingers crossed for you.

Well done on making 24 weeks bodhigirl, that is an excellent milestone. Good that you don’t have to drive up to Auckland any more as well. I’m over 37 weeks pregnant now. I got my stitch removed last Tuesday. It was quite painful so it was nice to be able to suck on the gas while they removed it. I had a few contractions immediately after removal and it looked like I was going to go into labour straight away but – no! So here I am, still pregnant. I’ll be discussing the option of induction at my appointment next week. All the very best for the rest of your pregnancy. :)
