Guess who went to the Waitakere City Council cloth nappy initiative launch today and won a $250 voucher! Needless to say I have invested (or indulged!) in some more Berry Plush naps.... I also got a spot prize of 2 print HH's!

PS. Liz, I actually met Charity this morning, she is really nice, but I think a little frazzled - they were rushed off their feet!

hehehe.. I haven't read what I missed cos it's 2 months worth..
But I'm back, I've sewn my first cover, need to make another one..

Liz, when I heard I'd be getting $1200 or something from the IRD for this new baby, I said to DH, imagine all the nappies I can buy with that...  He wasn't laughing and said, think of the mortgage!! Party pooper!!

E is still in night nappies and has taken to peeing her pants frequently these days, after weeks (months?) of doing really well.

Go Lauriel! Well done with the sewing. I think that you might be able to spend a little of that money on a Hire Kit then?

I don't think you get all that $$ at once - its paid out over a few weeks!

Would love to see the cover you did :D

You can take it either way - weekly for 10 (12?)weeks after bubs is born or as a lump sum payment at the end of the financial year. :)

Just useless info I have learnt in the course of my job.

I'd rather have it when the baby is born!!

Re my cover, it works really well over my home made fitted nappy.
It's now wide enough to cover the Snazzi or the Cutiebums adequately.
And I think I need to get wider FOE.

My nappies stink and I don't understand why. I do a pre-rinse, I wash with a little powder and some oxywhitener and I do a rinse at the end and they dry in the sun. :(

I haven't brought any nappies for awhile - getting a bit of withdrawl now :(

I sometimes have the same problem Lauriel, but dunno why because I do the same soaking thing as you do

I found adding some of that Canesten laundry rinse (or Dettol rinse) to the fabric softner dispenser helped lots with the smell.

Snap Lizzie - I was about to say the same thing. The FOE on Maya's trainers was getting really stinky but a bit of Dettol Fresh in the rinse cycle has worked magic.

Guess who's going to the Snazzipants opening? :P

Hi girls,

Lauriel and Telly, do you strip your nappies? I have to admit when I first heard of stripping I thought it was a bit strange and thought if I washed my naps well enough I wouldn't need to do that, until my nappies started to stink even after a little wee. So i tried stripping and it worked wonders, I actually think I do it differently to the rest of the world, but it works for us, even to the point that if Loraleis done, ahem, # 2s, sometimes I can't smell it through the nappy even when I plant my nose up against it (sorry, tmi). It takes a few goes at first to get them back to being totally stripped, but now I do it once every week or 2 and it's great.

I'm a bit embarrassed to post how I do it, but will if you want me to, let me know.

Ooooo, and Lauriel, you'll have to give me a few pointers on how to make a fitted (ie, pattern, fabric, etc), I'm starting to think of building up a stash for our new bub. I was going to use sposies at first (did I say that out loud???), but I think I'm going to try to go cloth from day 1, and I'm feeling good about it :cheese: yay me :starjump:

I'd be interested in how you strip your nappies Manda, if you don't mind sharing. I think we are getting to that point where something needs to be done!

Ok, here goes, but keep in mind, I do it 'backwards', but it REALLY works.

I soak my nappies in napisan, so, first of all I give them a quick spin out in the machine. Then they basically have 2 washes.

1st wash I put normal detergent in the machine and 1/2 C white vinegar in the fabric softener.

2nd wash I put 1/2 cup of baking soda in the machine and some cold water with a few drops of tea tree oil (I use Thurday Plantation tea tree) in the fabric softener dispenser.

You ight need to do it a few times to get rid of the smell fully, but it;s worth it.

I 'think' most others don't put in laundry detergent when they strip (I tried this but still got stinky nappies), and they do the vinegar and bs the other way around in 1 wash, ie, baking soda goes in the wash and vinegar in the fabric softener dispenser, then they put through a rinse to rinse out the vinegar. I'm sure it works, but when I first started doing it there was a few threads going on TNN and they were all different and there was some confusion. So I developed my own method and havn't had a stinky nappy or rashy bum (tmi, except for a few radioactive #2s) or leak since.

So there we go.

Tee hee, you laugh now, but we had a REALLY bad case of baboon butt and the face she pulled when I tried cleaning the said #2s was pretty close to baboon looking, come to think of it, the sounds coming out the other end :hissyfit: were pretty baboonish too.

I also wanted to say that I brought a couple of happy heinys (??) the other day too and just waiting for them to turn up - I got an urge to buy some and that I did, much to my husbands disgust.

I got a cow hide one and a pink camoflague one too!

When they arrive I will take some pictures :)

E has been in sposies for a week, yukky rashy spots, GP said some kind of infection due to poor hygiene (WTF!! but looked like E had done #2s at kindy and no one had wiped her bum.. ) and it happens often in TT toddlers.
So, antibiotics AND antibacterial cream, figured I'd keep away from the cloth naps until it clears up and thinking it would be a great opportunity to strip them. But I'm scared of doing that.

Manda, does your system work for a front loader as well?

A kind lady from TNN lent me her snap press for a week and now I have decided that I'm in love with snaps and print PUL! Here's my favourite creation:

Cool nappy Alana!!!

I've been buying tiny nappies (fitteds) on TM and yesterday I got some prefolds. I now need covers... Either I'll make some (yeah right!!) or I'll get some Moon-Eze, cos I like them better than Bummis Wraps..
