Hi ladies im thinking about ttc but just wondering if anobody here has had a placental abruption and if you were cared for any differently in your next preg, like any medications or through a specialist? I saw my midwife in town today and she said its safe for us to try again and that she wouldnt manage my pregnancy any differently but she was on holiday when everything happened with Ezra so im a bit nervous about it all. I feel like id be going into another pregnancy with no awnsers as to why it happened and nothing i can do to stop it happening again.

She had a placental abruption which resulted in the loss of wee Darien, she is now carrying a healthy little girl, as far as I know with no probs. She may see this anyway and reply.

We are only doing one thing differently this time:
After we lost Darien I tested positive for Factor V Leiden which makes your blood clot too much (and probably caused my concealed abruption) , so I'm on the half-dose aspirin for the whole preg and 6 wks after.
I recently had a doppler scan at 24wks to check blood flow through the placenta etc which turned out fine. That might be a possibility for you, to check the placenta next time?
I'm taking it a lot easier this time round, although it's obviously nerve wracking during the next pregnancy.

I'm not sure what they would do differently for your type of abruption, but definitely healthy eating and drinking helps outcomes (lecturing myself here LOL) and getting as informed as you can - although information is sometimes a burden rather than a help, KWIM?

There's such a low low chance of it happening again hun, but definitely be the 'squeaky wheel' and get the good care you want next time round so you feel supported.

Thanks Jessie, yeah i was expecting i might test positive for Factor V Leiden after reading about placental abruptions but but all my tests came back negetive so i will never know why it happened. Did you bleed throughout your pregnancy or does concealed mean it was all internal? I had my first big bleed at 5weeks but then it stoped then on and off for the next 15 weeks until that last week when things got so much worse. I find it hard to trust the doctors/midwives now but i guess i have to try stay positive that it hopefully wont happen again.

Oh so yours was a problem most of the way then? I didn't have a clue anything was wrong with mine until it actually happened. By concealed I mean a blood clot formed behind the placenta and the blood couldn't go anywhere so it pooled and detached the placenta from the wall. Really really ouchy and sudden, and no hint that it was going to happen as I didn't know about the Leiden thing till I was tested afterwards- ironically.

It's good that you don't have FVL, maybe they'll just insist on a heck of a lot of bedrest for you the next time, especially later on?

Yeah i had a blood clot behind the placenta too but some blood would bleed out aswell. On scans the blood clot was always there but by the time i was 16 weeks it was proberbly as small as a $2 coin. Despite my fear my midwife said she didnt think id bleed again and that everything would be fine. I was proberbly up to my 6th scan which also said baby is doing really well. At 18 weeks i bleed really heavily like thru a maternity pad an hour so i went to emergency i was admitted into a general ward surrounded by ederly people. Anyway i got sent home two days later stil bleeding very heavily and the blood clot had grown to 14cmx6. They didnt recommend bedrest but i was too scared to move much (although i do have a 2 year old so at times had no choice). I Kept bleeding then i started passing clots the size of the palm of my hand. I took myself back to the hospital and was admitted when the realised how low my iron levels were. The next few days were awful, i had blood transfusions hemeraged a litre of blood in minutes (i asked a midwife how bad is this could i die? she just looked at me seriously with concern and held my hand
Your right it is very painful, at that point i started having quite frequent contrations and things just got worse after that until i had Ezra a few days later.
Sorry if too much info, I havent talked about it in a while so i just kept typing. They never recommend bed rest for me which they heavily do in the states and apperently they dont in NZ at all?

Yikes Debs, that is horrid how awful for you 1L in 10 minutes is shocking! (I didn't lose as much as that but I did go into shock apparently.)
I had heard of ppl being put on bedrest for the 'peel away' kind of abruption, so it didn't go any further, IYKWIM?
Not TMI at all Debs, writing about it helps me process it a little more each time, I hope it does for you too.

Its been a while since i have been into this website hence only reading your post now. I had level three placenta abruption, the placenta completely torn away at 35 weeks pregnant. My little Kaleb lived for 25 hours. Unlike you i didn't have any issues with bleeding until 32 weeks when i thought my waters were breaking but it was blood. I spent 5 days in hospital and then sent home. The specialsits couldn't find any reason as to why this happened and was told it may or may not happen again that bleeding in pregnancy was common. Then at 35 weeks it happened again, this time i needed an emergy c section. ( I have written my story in the stories section, you are welcome to read if you want). This was in March 2007. I have gone on to have a daughter born in February 2008. I was treated differently. I had a mw with normal vistis and also specialist visits ( I went to the same specialist as i had in march 07, even tho my gp had sent a private and confidental letter to him advising i was pregnant my apptn got put in the mainstream of things and i was seen by a registrar, it happend that the registrar happened to be reading my thick file when the specialist walked around the corner and she called him over, he told the registar he wanted to speak with her and me and would be there in about 10 mins, during the talk with the registrar she talked about a specialist apptn later on in pregnancy but when the specialist arrived and joined in the conversation he said there would be alot more apptns..... so i believe if my specialist had not of walked around that corner at that moment i wouldn't of had any more apptns except one at the end of pregnancy, as i mentioned before this specialist was the one involved with both my emergy c section in march 07 and also was involved with the meetings held in the hospital and the follow up we had with him 8 weeks with kaleb's death. So when the time comes if a regristar tells you something you are not happy get that person to talk with the specialist. I ended up with monthly scans and monthly specialist apptns until december prior to the feb when the waters were on the very low side and from then on fornightly scans and specialist apptns. My placenta abruption was unknown as to why it happend but there were taking a precausion when the scan showed low waters as that first stay in hospital i had with the first blood loss, the waters were low then.

Good luck with ttc, pregnancy after loss is a tough one, everyone has different emotions about pregnancy after loss and i'm hear to talk and any more questions feel free to ask.
